Spring blizzard from atop a high ridge
A foot or more of blowing snow early one February morning. It was cold and slow going, but worth it. Love the adventure!
Promise of a new day.
Blue sky morning after a big snowstorm. Go left to the top, or right into a forest canyon with deep deep snow. Bright and hopeful!
X-Country Ski Trip near la Plata Peak
Above a frozen creek on a crisp, cold January morning. Perfect conditions and breathtaking views!
Revelation
Bushwhacking on the dark side of a ridge, a sunlit ridge reveals itself in the distance. Cold and steep.
Deep snow bushwhack
Snow piles up really deep on the leeward side of canyon walls. No wind as the snow piled up, so it rests thick on limbs. So quiet!
Snow climb bushwhack in narrow crevice.
Climbed up a narrow crevice on a cliff face. Calm in the crevice, but windy everywhere else. Snow was knee deep.
Reach for the sun.
A rocky pinnacle reaches up into the sun from a snow covered cliff in the shade. Dramatic.
For another day.
Made it to the top of this ridge today, but am out of time, so will have to do the far ridge another day.
Time to go somewhere warm.
Bushwhacking in the snow on the dark side of a ridge. Been out here for several hours, so now's the time to turn around and find a warm fire.
Sunny day in Crested Butte
Bright sunny day after a huge snowstorm in Crested Butte. Vast wide open snowfield took my breath away. Imagine this image hanging in your home or office.
Home for Christmas.
Climbed to the top of this ridge a few days before Christmas. Big snowstorm last night. Snow is pristine, untouched by deer, fox or any other critter. What a view!
Evening silence.
Bushwhacking down from a high ridge at sunset. Deep snow and long shadows create a magical twilight feeling. Day is done.
After the storm.
Deep snow in a narrow canyon, early in the morning after a heavy snowstorm. Some fox and rabbit tracks, but otherwise no sign of life. Deep, cool shadows with sunlit peak in the distance..
In the woods
Bushwhacking early one morning, I ran across these two mule deer. They checked me out, then bounded up the far slope through the trees. So graceful and fast!
Timeless quiet.
Snowy climb with low clouds and big flakes coming down. I liked the timeless quality of this prominent feature in the total silence.
Across the gap.
Sunny morning view across the gap between snow covered ridges. Cold, but beautiful time in the mountains.
Lookout point.
Came up on an opening on a snow frosted ridge, providing a perfect lookout point across the valley. I like to imagine others checking to see what's coming from this vantage point.
Blustry morning climb.
Spring storm moving above an icy ridge on a March morning. Freeze and thaw forming icicles. The sun was trying to come out through the wind driven, fast moving clouds.
Silent snow.
A quiet moment as snow falls on this rugged ridge eroded by wind and water over many years. Deadfall lightly frosted in the silence. The scene had an ancient, undisturbed feel.
February blizzard bushwhack/climb.
Early morning blizzard in February. Deep snow carved by howling wind on a high ridge as the sun tried to break through the clouds. Extreme conditions created a feeling of detachment from the rest of the world.
